The best ideas in GovTech we can copy

New Zealand is a member of the Digital 5 (Estonia, Israel, NZ, South Korea and the United Kingdom), a group of world-leading digital nations coming together to share their advancements in government services. So, what should we copy?

Estonia’s 1-Click Taxes
Estonia is often recognised as a world leader in GovTech and E-government. Since 2015, businesses have been able to pay their taxes in just one click!

Tax is calculated automatically by sharing bank information, allowing the user to simply click ‘pay’.

The amazing improvements to the way that the Estonian public experiences government is made possible by two key ingredients in their digital infrastructure:
Robust digital identity for citizens
Secure information sharing

UK’s 1 website for all of government
The United Kingdom came top in the UN’s 2016 E-Government Development Index. They have only 1 government website.

You would imagine that a super website for everything government would be chaotic and messy, not so. Gov.uk won an international awards for it’s clean and simple design. This website is a single point of truth combining over 400 departments, agencies, and other public bodies.

Proven and Open-source!
Both of the concepts above have been proven and their underlying code is freely available. It’s time for New Zealand to share in their benefits.
